In 1925 Copley returned with Gabain to Alassio to recuperate from ongoing heart problems. He began to compile material for a series of Italian landscapes and beach scenes, Working increasingly in etching, it being a less strenuous technique, his style showed a more relaxed hand. Three Bathers reflects this, but also shows Copley extending his figurative distortions quite radically, still able to give his subjects a strange twist.
